What Is GRAIN ROT?

GRAIN ROT launched worldwide on August 7, 2026 for PC via Steam after a breakout demo run: over 350,000 demo downloads, roughly 250,000 wishlists, and a Top 15 most-played demo slot during the June 2026 Steam Next Fest — remarkable for a two-person Swedish studio. Reviewers and players describe it as part extraction shooter, part physics comedy, part survival horror: four flammable wooden robots descend into ruins that rearrange themselves, while the corruption called the Rot warps bodies, distorts voices and degrades emotes the deeper you go.

The signature mechanic is the Living Spark: when your vessel splinters, collapses or catches fire, you don't respawn at base — your Spark escapes the wreckage and lingers in the run. Guide your teammates, scout the dark, and possess a fresh vessel with a completely different ability set before your Spark fades out for good. The Core Loop in 60 Seconds

  1. Prepare at the Outpost. Repair rooms, cure Rot, spend gold on upgrades, talk to Murch and Biggy.
  2. Read the elevator modifiers. Symbols like Shop Cube, Fuse, Map Room and Trap reshape the run before you descend.
  3. Loot the ruins. Demolish furniture with the mallet, pocket glowy artifacts, and feed bulk scrap into the Grinder — the loudest machine underground.
  4. Survive the Corrupted. Maddened vessels that hunt by sound, movement and pack behavior. Hold chokepoints or run.
  5. Extract or push deeper. Deeper layers mean richer loot and faster Rot. Call the elevator before greed wipes the crew.
  6. Rebuild the Outpost. Gold and blueprints unlock stamina rooms, weapon tiers, new constructs, and eventually the second floor.
