The Four Roles
| Role | Responsibility | Best for | Kit priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | Pathfinding, fuse/shop sweeps, noise discipline, audio callouts | Players with biome layout knowledge and good headphones | Stamina, light kit |
| Carrier | Loot drag, artifact custody, Grinder staging, extract-call authority on cargo | Players who stay calm under chase | Highest inventory tier, stamina |
| Anchor | Corrupted aggro, door control, chokepoint kills | Good melee timing | Sword, health, damage |
| Flex | Spark rescue, construct blocking, fills whatever the run breaks | Quick adapters who know Corrupted behavior | Inventory, gun (holstered) |
Roles rotate — vessels break unpredictably, and a possessed replacement may suit a different job. The Flex should know Corrupted behavior well enough to sacrifice their body for extraction timing when the run demands it.
Role Playbooks
▸Scout
- Call every elevator modifier aloud at descent
- Sweep side rooms on Shop Cube runs; hunt lockers on Fuse runs
- Announce directional screams — one player on headphones as the dedicated audio caller catches rear contacts before they arrive
▸Carrier
- Highest inventory tier from room upgrades; everyone else breaks and clears
- Board the elevator first when extracting — the cargo only survives if you do
- When your inventory nears full, call extract even if the Grinder queue isn't empty
▸Anchor
- Hold the nearest spawn door during every Grinder activation
- Sword at chokepoints; pull open-field fights to door constructs
- Rotate with a second anchor on long sessions — Elite fights fatigue melee timing faster than standard kiting
▸Flex
- Owns the Spark rescue chain: escort, block, possess
- Carries healing when Shop Cube rolls bottles
- Builds furniture blockers on the fly — tactical carpentry is the Flex's second health bar
Physics Trolling: the Sanctioned Art
The developers deliberately support friendly sabotage: dropkicking enemies, "accidentally" launching an ally's Spark out of a fresh vessel, trapping teammates in monster-infested corridors. The house-rule wisdom from demo crews:
- Random griefing destroys runs; planned chaos saves them. A launched Spark over an unclimbable barricade is a rescue, not a prank
- Common house rule: ban elevator-griefing, allow deep-layer pranks
- Pranks require group consent — surviving the monsters should be harder than surviving your friends, not easier
Pre-Descent Comms Checklist
- Extract call — who decides when the run ends
- Spark priority — loot vs. rescue when both are risky
- Grinder rules — one operator, or shared duty?
- Deep-layer abort threshold — corruption percentage or timer
Frequently Asked Questions
How many players is GRAIN ROT best with?
Four. Online co-op supports up to four players, and the Scout / Carrier / Anchor / Flex template maps cleanly onto a full squad. Solo is fully playable but removes Spark rescue support.
Can you grief teammates in GRAIN ROT?
Yes — physics lets you dropkick enemies, launch an ally's Spark from their vessel, or wall teammates in with monsters. It's a designed feature; crews typically ban elevator-griefing and allow consensual deep-layer pranks.
