Murch and Biggy, the Outpost NPCs — GRAIN ROT gameplay

The Living Spark (You)

The player character isn't a person — it's a Living Spark, a persistent flame that possesses wooden vessels. It has no face and no canon name, and that's the point: every body it wears is temporary. When a vessel breaks, the Spark escapes; when every vessel in the crew breaks, the run's loot dies with them. Read the full mechanic in the Spark & possession guide.

Murch — the Tech Expert

Murch runs the Outpost workshop and introduces himself after the tutorial elevator tease as the one handling "most of the complicated things around here." He's the progression gatekeeper:

Co-op routine: one player talks to Murch after every return while the others repair — his rapport bonuses are free coins, and skipping him is leaving money on the table.

Biggy — the Self-Declared Boss

Biggy frames himself as the Outpost's boss with comic bravado, while Murch quietly handles anything complicated. His domain is morale and maintenance:

Demo feedback is consistent: crews that skip Biggy's cleaning tasks see slower room upgrade efficiency. Humor him — mop the floor.

Rescued Survivors (1.0)

The launch feature list confirms rescuing survivors trapped in the deep layers. Rescued survivors join the Outpost as part of persistent progression — expect new NPC objectives that reroute deep runs and expand the base's cast. We'll document each survivor's location and unlock effect as they're verified in-game.

The Corrupted — Fallen Characters

Enemy vessels are characters too, in the worst way: the Corrupted are vessels whose Sparks were consumed by the Rot. The game's lore note for them — "not home anymore" — is the closest thing GRAIN ROT has to a tragedy. Spark Remnants, the salvageable partially-intact husks, are what that story looks like when you find it mid-run.

Casting Note

The studio disclosed using AI-generated voiceover for a few in-game characters during development, alongside AI-assisted tooling, while stating creative and gameplay decisions remained their own. It was a pre-launch community talking point; the disclosure is on the Steam page.
